New Beginnings

Well, here we go.  I'm sure everyone who ever wrote a blog considered the title "A blog about nothing", a la Seinfeld,  but as a produce broker, and avid micro farmer, I want to comment about the business of vegetables.  From seed to harvest to customer's shopping cart, and everything in between, there is plenty to discuss.
Right now it is snowing and 5degrees above zero here in Peru, N.Y., so there is no activity on the home front, but the seeds have been ordered and planning for the new season here at Almena Gardens has begun.  And not a moment too soon judging by the wild weather around the world.  Producers and consumers alike are in for a wild ride with prices and weather conditions testing patience and pocketbooks.
We are shipping lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and carrots from Mexico, spring mix and spinach from Florida, and carrots from Israel.  Prices on all these items are near record highs.  What will consumers do as their produce favorites double or triple in price?
